What in a Name?
She had stepped onto the elevator with me and immediately began sharing her life’s story. By the time we reached the lobby at St Kates I knew that she had been married and divorced that year, and that she didnt feel comfortable taking the anti-depressants the doctor had recommended for her grief. “This. Chick. Is. Crazy,” I thought to myself. “Hey, where did you park? Do you need a ride to your car?” she asked. If you have experienced University parking you’ll understand when I say that I would have accepted a ride not only with a crazy stranger but with Jack the Ripper himself if it would save me the walk to my car. I eagerly accepted, and we made our way to 1 hour parking. She introduced herself as Tina, and as I slid into the passenger side of the vehicle, she started the engine. “Oh, your door doesn’t close all the way, you’ll have to hold it shut” she nonchalantly told me as she pulled onto the road. I was holding on with all my might as we rounded the corners, my mother’s voice ringing in my ears about not accepting rides from strangers. The door threatened to win the fight against my death grip at every turn. Um, did you ever think about maybe fixing the door?” I asked. “You know, that’s a good idea”, she said. In my mind I pictured us stopping at a garage and paying someone to look at the door. Tina immediately pulled over, got out of her car, and dragged out a huge tool box. “Come on, help me”, she instructed. This. Chick. Is. Crazy…and COOL. I was fascinated. We sat on the curb, and I handed her tools while she confidently pounded on the latch of the door. I hadn’t held a tool in my hands since I was 5 years old. My miniature hammer, with the screwdriver built into the handle was confiscated when I hit my sister in the head with it. (Sorry-not sorry-Holly). She let me do the honors of closing the door and it latched perfectly! We high-fived to girl power, and a friendship was born over our first joint project. Our friendship grew quickly over shared passions for cooking, raising our families, and how to keep ourselves and those we loved HEALTHY. Though we met in a “Western Medicine” program, and enjoyed many years in the field, we also saw the limitations of one school of thought. We preferred an approach that promoted wellness, vs treating sickness. We investigated different diets, learned about Eastern medicine, and delighted in researching how we could be our most Happy, Healthy and Beautiful selves.
That first car ride was really a metaphor for our friendship, which usually involves one of us hanging on for dear life while the other one steers and yells, “Don’t worry, we’ve got this.” So, dear readers, Welcome to our website. We are so excited to have you join us, and we can’t wait to hear your thoughts, ideas, and feedback. Let’s learn together. It’s going to be a grand adventure! Climb in and enjoy the ride!
